Ellen DeGeneres has always subjected her guests to tricky questions. The singer Blake Shelton must have been prepared for that, but he didn't anticipate the awkward turn the interview took.
Everything went well at the beginning of the show. Shelton pretended not to accept Ellen's claim that he was no longer seen by the public as People's "Sexiest Man Alive." The good-natured banter seemed not to bother the singer. But things quickly took a turn for the worse.
That's because the host decided to ask Shelton about his relationship with his girlfriend Gwen Stefani. That seemed natural for a talk show host, considering that the couple has received so much attention. But notably, Shelton shifted uncomfortably in his seat. Why did Shelton seem to be so embarrassed?
Shelton met Gwen Stefani on the seventh season of "The Voice" as her co-judge of the show in 2014. During that time, rumors had it that there were flirtations between the two, but Stefani denied it all. Interestingly, things took a turn only a few months later.
In November 2015, E! News reported that Shelton and Stefani were dating at Maroon 5's Halloween party in Studio City, California. After that, the couple made it official, according to Shelton's reps. Apparently, the couple was happily in love. Then why would Shelton be so upset by DeGeneres's prodding?
Before Shelton was seen dating Stefani, he had split with the country star Miranda Lambert in July 2015. One month later, Stefani filed for divorce, too. But neither of them revealed their reasons. After that, rumors began to swirl.
Stefani also had to settle the rumor that she broke up with her ex because he had an affair. She responded, "All you have to do is listen to every single song I've ever written, and it's all there. It's an ongoing theme that I've had for a long time." In Cosmopolitan's interview in 2015, she said, "Nobody would believe it if I could really say what happened. I went through months and months of torture."
In December 2018, Ellen DeGeneres comforted Stefani on her show, "Stefani deserves everything she has. She deserves this love with Shelton. She deserves the life that she has and the career. 'Cause she went through a lot." These words moved Stefani to tears.
DeGeneres didn't stop at showing her kindness. She diverted the conversation to her friend's relationship, "So Blake told me that y'all are engaged now." The singer denied it instantly. But DeGeneres didn't give up so easily. She even asked her when they would tie the knot. In the end, Stefani didn't confirm anything.
DeGeneres also teased Shelton about their relationship on the hit show in May 2019. She talked about Shelton's part in the film UglyDolls at first, and then turned to his girlfriend, "Jennifer Lopez was here, and I wanted to help her out with her boyfriend Alex Rodriguez because she wanted to marry him, obviously, like Stefani wants to marry you."
DeGeneres kept talking about the clock she gave to Lopez and how it contributed to her engagement. And the host said "Mother's Day is coming up. I have something for you to give to her." Then an assistant brought out a clock with a picture of him and Stefani kissing. Shelton looked so sheepish.
The unpleasant story paved the way for DeGeneres to pick up the relationship issue again on the show, as previously mentioned. The host didn't let the topic go and asked, "Remember that clock I gave you? To remind you time is ticking." So how would Shelton deal with the tricky situation?
The country star started to fire back, "But you didn't give it to me. I walked backstage, and somebody back there was like, 'Hey, thanks for being on the show. Can I have the clock back?' And they took it." It seemed someone had been close to losing his temper. What would DeGeneres say?
DeGeneres was shocked by the updated version of the clock story and said, "We haven't given it to you? Well, that's not right. We can't – why do we need it?" Well, that offered a chance for Shelton to retort.
Already irritated by the joke, Shelton couldn't help making fun of the host, "You took it back because whoever your next guest was, you replaced the picture and did the same cr*p to them and embarrassed them."
DeGeneres didn't seem afraid of the face-to-face challenge and remarked, "You're right – because we did 'the clock gag' to Jennifer Lopez, and now she's engaged."
To Shelton's credit, he finally got his back on DeGeneres. After Shelton revealed a doll made to commemorate his role in UglyDolls, as the gift to the host, he added, "I won't take it back from you like you did the clock." But Shelton didn't expect that the annoying present would delight somebody.
After the interview, Shelton admitted that Gwen loves the idea of the clock, according to Entertainment Tonight. The interviewer asked him whether Stefani "got the memo" that she should propose to him. Shelton answered, "She said you know this isn't how it's gonna work." So will the gift be helpful?
Though Shelton may have doubted the clock's effectiveness, their recent tweets showed it did work. On October 27, Shelton shared a picture that he and Stefani were kissing, and she wore an engagement ring! He tweeted, "Hey @gwenstefani, thanks for saving my 2020... And the rest of my life... I love you. I heard a YES!"
