Prince Philip's death left the British royal family in great sorrow but it won't change the line of succession. Nevertheless, folks wonder how possible it is for Prince William to skip his father, Prince Charles, to succeed to the throne. And the Queen's new move may signal who will become the next King.
Prince Charles is the first child of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip. He was born in 1948 and was only three when he became the heir. Yet his route to the top position was much longer and harder than he expected.
This is when Prince Charles was writing his essays at the University of Cambridge. Besides, he also studied at the U.K.'s Royal Air Force College and Royal Naval College, which prepared him to be a commander-in-chief. With a flawless background, Prince Charles was expected to couple up with a "perfect" woman.
Prince Charles had an on-and-off relationship with Camilla Parker Bowles since 1970, but his family didn't see her as a match for him. Instead, the Queen Mother introduced several granddaughters of her friends to her grandson. Charles was reported to have fallen in love with Lady Diana after seeing her sister and her.
The heir to the throne proposed to Diana in 1981. Prior to that, his ex-girlfriend Camilla had become engaged to Andrew Parker Bowles whilst the Prince was serving in the Navy. In 1986, Camilla happened to contact Charles and they both strayed from their respective marriages soon after. However, they might not have thought of the fallout if their affair was discovered.
In 1992, Charles and Camilla's explicit phone recording was exposed, ruining the reputation of him and the royal family as a whole. Though the unconventional pair had figured out ways to seal divorces with their first spouses, it was still impossible for Charles to remarry Camilla unless he made a significant concession.
Under the strict rules of the Church of England, Charles would risk losing the throne if he was determined to remarry. For your reference, Edward VIII had abdicated to marry an American divorcée named Wallis Simpson in 1936. Besides his possible remarriage, more troubles stand in his way of becoming the King.
"Camillagate" had taken a heavy toll on Prince Charles' popularity. On the recent Oprah Show, his son Prince Harry's negative comments about him just made it even worse. He was consequently suspected to be the one who judged Harry's son Archie about his skin color. Last month, Pollsters Deltapoll's new poll showed that Prince William's popularity had reached 47%, versus Charles' poor 27%.
According to parliamentary statutes, Prince Charles can only succeed to the throne when Queen Elizabeth abdicates or passes away. As the longest-reigning head of state in the world, the Queen is still vibrant, and she attended to royal duties four days after her husband Prince Philip's death. Moreover, royal experts have said that it is unlikely that the Queen will step down. However, Charles is 72 years old now.
Above all, he and Camilla's remarriage was a big obstacle to his future kingship, second only to his premature death. Luckily for him, the church changed the remarriage rule in 2002, and he walked down the aisle with Camilla three years later.
The loss of Prince Philip didn't alter the line of succession but it did leave Prince Charles as the patriarch of the royal family. The Sun reported that Charles would be appointed as Her Majesty's official "consort" and would be involved in more royal affairs. The Queen's new move was believed to be a way to prepare Charles to become the King.
Only if Prince Charles stays healthy and stops making negative headlines will he become the head of the U.K. one day. However, it is still uncertain whether there will be King Charles III because he can choose his regal title from his other names.
Even if Charles comes to the throne, it is less likely that his wife Camilla will become a Queen or Queen Consort. Since the start of their marriage, the royal family has made that decision, which is a tribute to the late Princess Diana. The couple's spokesperson also confirmed that Camilla would be called "Princess Consort" then.
At that time, Prince William will be the new heir to the throne when he and his wife become Prince of Wales and Princess of Wales. By the way, when William becomes the King, Kate will be known as Queen Catherine. We shall be waiting for a long time to see the next Queen.
In the explosive Oprah Show in March, Meghan questioned why she and Harry's son Archie hadn't received his title of Prince yet. However, the "George V or George VI convention" entitles Archie to become Prince Archie when his grandfather Charles becomes the King.
Once Prince Charles succeeds to the throne, he and his wife Camilla will move from Clarence House to Buckingham Palace, which was revealed by the Daily Star in March last year.
A plan for what will happen in the UK after the Queen's death was invented in the 1960s and is named "Operation London Bridge." Therefore, after Her Majesty's death, Radio Alert Transmission System will send the news to the mass media as "London Bridge Is Down."
Sir Christopher Geidt, the Queen's private secretary, will inform the prime minister of the news before making headlines. Then the PM will relay the message to the 36 nations of the Commonwealth.
It is likely that everyone working in the U.K. will be able to take the rest of the day off when their monarch passes away. Banks and stock exchanges will be closed during the funeral. Only after her funeral can the B.B.C. continue to broadcast comedies.
