Bruce Beach spent 5 decades building an underground city with 42 school buses. Odd as it sounds, the 86-yr-old man had been persistent even though the local government had spent $250,000 trying to stop him. What were his motives all along? Was he hiding from something?
Despite his age, Beach managed to build a mysterious maze of buses. It's hidden deep under the snow and ice in Ontario, Canada. Nobody was able to pinpoint Beach's vision for decades until the man himself revealed what'd been driving him all these years - fear in his heart. What was he afraid of?
Growing up in Kansas, Beach went through a turbulent time during the '60s. The realities of war and what that entailed was too much for him to handle, so he fled to his wife's hometown of Canada, fearful of another war taking place in his own country. That was also when he decided to build an underground haven. But why did he need all those buses?
To construct a safe megastructure, Beach needed to collect enough reinforced steel, and school buses were a great source. From 1980 to 1985, the man purchased 42 retired buses in total. It cost him over $12,000, but this was nothing compared to the next stage of his mission…
Beach decided to set up the shelter in his wife's hometown of Horning's Mills, a rural village far from prying eyes. He dug a 14-foot pit on his 12.5-acre field, took the buses apart, and strategically arranged them in this massive hole. Convinced that doomsday was always around the corner, the man knew he had to move fast.
Beach filled the hole with 2 feet of concrete to keep the structure well-hidden from the outside world. By connecting each bus together, he created a labyrinth and named it "Ark Two," hoping that it would save people from the coming apocalypse. Let's see what mystery awaits inside!
To make sure the fort didn't get contaminated, Beach would keep out anyone that carried any infectious disease. And to be even more thorough, he even set up a decontamination chamber for people so that they could have an immediate shower upon entry.
Beach's creation was named "Ark Two" for a reason. It includes every type of room required to facilitate basic living needs in case of a cataclysmic event. And speaking of this, how would Beach get access to drinking water in the first place?
Beach had thought ahead. He dug a well inside the bunker, so that the structure could run self-sufficiently. Besides this, Beach had also come up with lots of other ingenious plans to meet other necessities of life.
Another thing we can't live without is food. For that, Beach built a massive kitchen equipped with a stove and an oven. Plus, he constantly stocked up on groceries so there'd be enough supply to go around if a disaster hit.
To save as much living space as possible, Beach put a large number of triple bunk beds in his shelter. And if you're wondering, they were built with reinforced bed frames, so safety was surely guaranteed.
The bathroom is also an essential part of Ark Two. Considering how many people this barrack could fit, Beach designed both public restrooms and private bathrooms in an attempt to accommodate everyone's needs.
There was one more thing on Beach's list - building a classroom for the kids. He was adamant that the younger generation couldn't grow up without education, so he set up this room, hoping that it would keep the children active and motivated.
Despite the government's efforts to shut it down over the years, Ark Two remains a safe haven for anyone in need. "All are welcome as long as you follow the rules," Beach smiled in an interview.
As Beach himself put it, "there's always more to do than one can do." Maintaining a massive bunker like this is no easy job, but the hope for a better future keeps the man going.
