When Gaga and Cooper sang the love song "Shallow" together at the 2019 Oscars, their apparent chemistry gave all audiences a flutter. Whatever people assumed them to be, they remained silent on the matter. Yet Lady Gaga finally opened up about their relationship. What did she say?
At the 91st Academy Awards ceremony, a performance stood out as an absolute highlight of the grand event. Yes, we refer to Gaga and Cooper's duet "Shallow", the hit song from their 2018 film A Star Is Born. The romantic air got everybody curious about whether the pair were secretely lovers.
Since Lady Gaga started out as a singer in 2008, her name has been in the headlines now and then. Her signature songs like "Poker Face" and "Bad Romance" made her name. And she also has an eye-catching fashion sense. Gaga once wore a meat dress at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards. So why would the hot singer invite an actor to sing with her?
Lady Gaga is also known as an actor. Her most famous role must be singer Ally in A Star Is Born. Plus, the country music star who fell in love with her was played by Bradley Cooper, the film's director and producer. Despite having rarely directed a movie, he is genuinely a veteran actor.
Cooper skyrocketed to prominence for his role in The Hangover in 2009. Since then, he has always been the starring actor in his projects. Plus, his recognizable voice is part of his appeal. He even gave vocal life to the Marvel Cinematic Universe's aggressive Rocket Raccoon. If you look at his Oscar performance "Shallow", you will be impressed by the fact that he is also a good singer.
They started the show in a quite unconventional way. The camera shot the two singers from behind the piano but facing the audience since the pair had got up from their seats. And then they held each other's hands and walked to the stage. This original setup caught everyone's eye.
The moment they took their seats, it was like the pair were sharing the same space, and that the audience had disappeared in their minds. During their soulful singing, they kept gazing and almost leaned on each other over the mic. Moments later, Lady Gaga's speech dropped more hints for us.
Soon after the performance, Lady Gaga received the award for Best Original Song for "Shallow." After that, she delivered a tearful acceptance speech. Besides thanking her family, she quickly turned the focus to her partner, "Bradley, there is not a single person on the planet that could have sung this song with me but you. Thank you for believing in us." But a name unmentioned disclosed more.
Lady Gaga had been engaged to talent agent Christian Carino in November 2017. But Gaga didn't mention him in her Oscar or her Grammy's acceptance speeches. Most apparently, she had stopped wearing her engagement ring since the February 2019 Grammy Awards. Her representative confirmed the suspicions that the couple had parted. So does that mean Gaga-Cooper romance could be a real thing?
Yet Cooper was not available at that time. He had been dating supermodel Irina Shayk since 2015, and they had a daughter two years later. But the fact didn't prevent the rumors from swirling.
Finally, Lady Gaga revealed all the things behind "Shallow" on Jimmy Kimmel Live! The host firstly spoke highly of the stunning duet and moved on to the topic of the stir it had caused, "Because you had such a connection with Bradley that instantly… people started saying, 'They must be in love.'"
"First of all, social media, quite frankly, is the toilet of the internet," Gaga replied. And what it has done to pop culture is just, like, abysmal." Then she talked about the juiciest part—her relationship with Cooper.
Gaga said that they'd orchestrated the whole performance. If anyone saw love, that's what they'd intended to do. After all, "Shallow" is a love song produced for a romantic movie. On that stage, they were both actors and singers. Gaga also pointed out Cooper's devotion to the format.
Having known Cooper as a director, Gaga trusted his judgement. Therefore, Cooper was entitled to design all the details, including the camera positioning, shot timing, and the intro's omission. And especially the lighting—they lit the audience instead of themselves.
Gaga continued to talk about her feelings during the cooperation. She explained, "It was just great, and from a performance perspective, it was just so important to both of us that we were connected the entire time." Though the intimacy was part of their acting, there was empathy between them both.
Kimmel also noted Cooper's nice vocals and wondered whether he was terrified to sing with Gaga on live television. Then Gaga remarked on his professional singing, and she thought Cooper was not scared of it. The moment he sang the first line of the love song, the audience began to cheer. Gaga also encouraged him in her own unique way.
Gaga said she was so excited and kept encouraging him internally, "Yes, Bradley, yes, they love it, keep going! We've got this!" It looked like her wish had come true. Though Lady Gaga declared that their relationship was just platonic, would Cooper's girlfriend see it the same way?
His girlfriend Shayk did not openly state her opinion. But Awkwardly, Shayk was sitting in the Oscars' auditorium and later right between her boyfriend and Gaga. She didn't seem mad or jealous as people supposed her to be. The model was even the first up out of her seat and hugged Gaga. She seemed not to care about it, but there were some celebrities who felt sorry for her.
The Spice Girls' Melanie Brown shared her position on Good Morning Britain, "I felt so uncomfortable for Bradley's girlfriend, oh my gosh." And she hoped it was just a piece of professional acting.
Comedian and actor David Spade made a bolder comment, "Is there any chance these two aren't F-word?", which prompted Cooper's ex-wife to reveal her feelings about it.
Esposito replied to Spade's assumption with "Ha." But after being bombarded with press coverage, she clarified that that laugh was simply a response to Spade's wording, and that she'd found it funny.
