After Obama's presidency, he and Michelle plunked down $8.1M to buy their rented 8,200-square-foot mansion to stay in the D.C. Read on to peek inside their posh Tudor house, which even makes the White House look like a shack.
The antique brick wall and the patina copper awning have given us a clue to the house's rich history that can date back to the 1920s.
The checkered marble floor in the foyer strikes a balance between fashion and tradition, which echoes the decor of the living room several feet away.
The spacious living room is a decent place to receive guests, featuring a central fireplace, an expansive beige carpet, and some suede and cotton sofas of the contrasting colors.
Out of the nine bedrooms in the house, the former first couple's master suite boasts the most classical elegance with neutral bluish-gray walls and crown molding.
There's a sitting area at one side of the king-size bed, which is perfect for the couple to have some private talks or light reading before bed.
The master bedroom features adjoining "his and her" bathrooms. "Her bathroom" is typical of Michelle's taste. Two "Elle" signs and a leopard-print seat add a chic touch to the graceful space.
Though the two bathrooms share a similar palette, Barack's bathroom employs more of a Scandinavian style by involving minimal items.
As a couple who usually appear in the spotlight, they need a sizable walk-in closet to support their stylish dressing. However, Michelle once told Ellen Degeneres that Obama didn't share enough space from it. "Sorry," she joked.
Though Sasha was Barack's youngest daughter, she has lived in the biggest bedroom in the mansion since she was just a baby. Her suite consists of a living room and a bedroom where the furniture was all custom-made to her size.
Compared to her younger sister, Malia's attic bedroom seems much more humble. Michelle once joked, "She's away at college. You don't waste rooms on college kids."
However, Malia's bedroom is still not the smallest room in the house. On The Ellen Degeneres Show, Michelle revealed that her husband got the smallest one as his office, containing floor-to-ceiling bookshelves and a stepper.
The house has two well-equipped kitchens. One of them boasts a 6-burner gas range and a large center island with a marble countertop, making cooking a pleasant experience.
The family's dining room includes a round wooden table, several comfortable chairs, and a chandelier. The spacious room looks even bigger with the beautiful sunlight pouring through the French doors during the day.
The mansion incorporates a cosy sitting area designed particularly for the family to chill out. The room features two white built-in shelves, a contrasting dark wooden floor, and an entire wall of full-height windows, through which you can see the lush greenery in the backyard.
Walk down to the lowest floor, and you will find the hidden retreat in the mansion. The basement boasts a built-in bookcase, a media room, and a wet bar for the entertainment of both the parents and the daughters.
There's a spacious kitchen in the basement, and it is well equipped with stainless steel appliances, including an oven, a microwave, and a side-by-side refrigerator.
The pantry neatly stores the dishes and some handy appliances including a toaster. The former president once disclosed that he liked to make a cheese toast himself for breakfast, which had been a big no-no during his presidency in the White House.
The house is also designed with enough guest rooms to accommodate the family's friends. Just like other bedrooms, this guest room looks fresh and neat with only delicate shades.
The backyard has a piece of green lawn with a flagstone path around it. Plenty of outdoor sunbeds lie there for the family and guests to have a rest in the gentle breeze and golden sunshine.
The marvelous property sits in a gated community of Kalorama. To further enhance his family's safety, Obama erected 6-foot fences around the house. The structure has such tight security that it was once joked by Donald Trump to be a 10-foot-walled fortress.
