Celine Dion has recently been making headlines all over the internet due to her thinner frame. Fans were concerned about her health while body shamers began to spread rumors about her sudden weight loss. To hit back at the critics, Dion finally revealed the real reason. Read on to find what it is.
Celine Dion, the legendary pop icon, has recently grabbed eyeballs for her alarming appearance instead of her fruitful accomplishments. Fans of the "My Heart Will Go On" songstress came to her Instagram page to comment on her photos. Meanwhile, the rumors about her major weight loss continued to swirl.
Having been the target of an endless stream of harsh headlines such as "shocking weight loss" and "scary skinny" over a number of months, the 51-year-old Canadian singer has got no choice but to finish off the outright bullying.
Dion has gone through a lot so far, both in her life and in her career. And she has also suffered medical problems and undergone surgeries. Unsurprisingly, people talking about her weight and state of health have filled her heart with such sadness that the star had to come clean to her critics.
Dion made a name for herself while she was just a teenager, but she had agonized over her looks since she went to school. Due to her problem with her teeth, she didn't have many friends and even fell victim to school bullying. However, the unfair treatment was just the beginning.
Despite the awards she received for her talent, her manager René Angélil realized her appearance would become a problem in her musical career and suggested that she should change her image for an international audience.
Having been cruelly teased as "Canine Dion" by a native Quebec magazine, young Dion spent a year and a half transforming herself, including getting her teeth straightened. However, the changes for Dion were just beginning.
In addition to straightening her teeth, Dion also changed a haircut as well as her style. Well, although these changes seemed not to be that hard, learning a new language was a different story. She took 18 months to learn English. Happily, Dion's hard work paid off when her first album in English became a hit. In 1994, she married her manager in a high-profile ceremony.
A mere year later, Dion joined the soul star Peabo Bryson to sing the title song of Disney's hit movie Beauty And The Beast. And that track unsurprisingly catapulted Dion to worldwide fame. Following the massive success, Dion's self-titled album also sold exceptionally well and went double platinum.
As expected, Dion released the defining song of her career when she performed "My Heart Will Go On," the soundtrack to the blockbuster film Titanic. The track soon topped charts and won her two Grammy Awards. At that time, Dion never thought that her success would silence those critics who'd rather comment on her looks.
Around that time, Dion began to wear daring dresses and unusual ensembles to red-carpet events and became well-recognized for her style and hits. Her fashion choices such as the white blazer worn backwards at the 1999 Oscars and the sheer black outfit at the 1993 Grammys filled plenty of column inches.
Still, Dion's main focus was music. A whopping 13 albums were released before the turn of the millennium. Meanwhile, her life was riddled with joys and sorrows. She welcomed her first child René-Charles Dion Angélil in 2001 and kept her husband company while he was battling cancer.
Becoming a mother meant a lot to Dion, so as she was approaching 40 years old, she decided to have more children. And the frozen embryo turned out to be two children. In 2010, Dion gave birth to twins Eddy and Nelson.
Just as Dion continued to excel in the studio and on stage, something struck Dion as a lightning bolt. Her husband passed away in 2016, losing his battle with cancer. Then within 48 hours, the singer suffered a double whammy when her brother Daniel passed away as well.
Knowing that she had to stand tall and do the best she could, Dion threw herself into fashion after her losses. Though not in her twenties anymore, she believed that it was never too late to feel good about yourself. In 2018, she even launched Célinununu, a gender-neutral clothing range for children, encouraging the young to strengthen their personalities based on mutual respect.
Dion's life seemed to be getting better, but it was not long before people began to comment on how she looked once more. Her posts of several photos on Instagram were met with a flow of critical responses. People quipped that she looked starved and suggested she had an eating disorder.
After some cruel remarks aimed her way over several months, Dion finally stood out to criticize those commenters in public. She said she wanted to feel strong and feminine and asked people who didn't like the way she looked to leave her alone.
Dion talked about her look openly in the hope of stopping the endless remarks, but to no avail. Some even claimed that she had a mental problem. Exhausted in her efforts to contend with them, Dion explained to the press about how she had built up her self-esteem.
Dion revealed the reason why she had been losing weight. And the cause was nothing more sinister than a newfound love of ballet. Performing ballet has always been Dion's dream, but it requires a lot of effort. Nevertheless, Dion gave her all while practicing, often four times a week. Naturally enough, weight loss came along with her hard work.
While other critical comments are still to be found, the singer has been strong enough to allow herself to be happy and live an enriched life. Looking forward, she expresses that she will stay busy and keep creating. Of course, nothing will impede the legendary singer's strong will!
