Humans have long been fascinated by big, bold things like big buildings, big planes, and yes, big boats. Nowadays, boats just kept getting bigger, first becoming yachts, then megayachts, superyachts, and even gigayachts. In this article, you'll see 20 of the world's largest yachts. Believe it or not, you'll definitely be surprised by the particular yacht launched in 1865.
Measuring 410 feet in length and costing an estimated $250 million, Maryah is a giant converted research vessel. She has now been transformed into a private cruiser after a five-year refit in Greece. Last in this list, but certainly not least in any sense of the word, Maryah is definitely the 'Aquaman' of the seas.
At 414 feet long and costing around $200 million, this megayacht has remained in the possession of the late Paul Allen since its delivery in 2003 by Lürssen. The American entrepreneur and philanthropist threw parties aboard during the Cannes Film Festival, and had Octopus assist in many key scientific and historic expeditions.
Measuring 436 feet in length, Al Mirqab was built in Germany in 2008 by Peters Schiffbau, now known as Peters Werft. Costing $250 million, the superyacht is now in Qatari hands and has been spotted in Monaco, Venice, and the Greek isles in the past several months.
At 439 feet long, Serene was made by Italian shipyard Fincantieri and designed by Reymond Langton Design. Delivered in 2011, the megayacht boasts a snow room with real snowfall. Constructed at a cost of $330 million, the yacht was sold for $456 million in 2015.
Just shy of 443 feet in length, Crescent is an amazing large motor yacht that was known as Project Thunder during construction by Lurssen. Delivered in 2018 and costing about $600 million, the Crescent features a multi-deck atrium, and is fitted with floor-to-ceiling glass. You certainly can't miss it!
This spacious yacht boasts an overall length of 446 feet and a beam of 67 feet. Costing $146 million, the Shu comes complete with two helicopter pads, and the sundeck aft has a D-value of 59 feet and the bridge deck forward has a D-value of 46 feet. Because of her size, she is able to accommodate some of the world's largest helicopters.
Measuring 454 feet long and costing $200 million, the Rising Sun was built by Germany's Lürssen in 2014 for American billionaire Larry Ellison, CEO of Oracle Corporation. The motor yacht currently belongs to fellow American businessman David Geffen. He entertains his many Hollywood clients and friends aboard the vessel.
At 457 feet long and costing an estimated $200 million, Al Salamah had one of the best code names ever during construction: Mipos, for "Mission Possible." It's because the Saudi owner of the superyacht wanted delivery from Lürssen within two years.
Her overall length of 459 feet makes Ocean Victory the biggest yacht constructed in Italy. Russian-owned, the Fincantieri superyacht costs $300 million and features a floodable tender garage, six pools, and multiple helicopter areas, plus a hangar.
During development at ADM Shipyards of Abu Dhabi, this nearly 463-foot long superyacht was code named Swift 141, the number being her LOA in meters. Delivered in 2015 and costing over $180 million, Yas is constructed upon the hull of a former navy frigate, which itself was constructed in 1978.
Constructed by German shipyard Nobiskrug, this 468-footer is sail-assisted, but she runs on engines primarily, despite her name. Costing around $300 million, Sailing Yacht A is definitely a feat of engineering. Its main mast is over 328 feet in height.
Launched in 1865, this 479 feet long superyacht holds the distinction of being the oldest yacht on this list. El Mahrousa was once used for military training drills. She currently serves as Egypt's presidential yacht and entertains international heads of state.
Prince Abdulaziz is one of the royal yachts of the Saudi royal family and is named after a Saudi Prince. At 482 feet long and costing an estimated $100 million, the megayacht was completed in Denmark by a commercial yard named Helsingør Værft in 1984.
Measuring 483 feet in LOA, this luxury yacht was constructed by Germany's Lürssen. Costing a whopping $527 million, Topaz has more to boast than simply the styling signature of exterior designer Tim Heywood. Her ownership has remained confidential since its delivery in 2012.
This lavish 508-footer was made to order by Lürssen in 2006 at an expense of $250 million. During its construction, the yacht was code named Project Sunflower. Since its delivery in 2008, Al Said has remained in the hands of Sultan Qaboos of Oman.
The 512-footer was built as Project Omar by the German shipyard Lürssen and delivered in 2016. Costing $250 million, the superyacht boasts the largest indoor pool aboard a yacht, containing 47,551 gallons of water. Dilbar also has a total area of around 108,000 square feet of faired and painted surfaces.
At 531 feet long and costing around $400 million, this luxury vessel was originally constructed for Brunei royalty by both the Blohm + Voss and Lürssen shipyards before 1996. Progress stopped until 2001 when the ruler of Dubai acquired the hull and had it completed. Dubai is now kept in home waters.
Plenty of rumors swirl around this 533 feet, $500 million superyacht. A popular one is that Eclipse has anti-paparazzi lasers, making cameras useless. However, the truth is that this marvelous ship has a private owner's deck and volume surpasing 13,500 gross tons.
While there was another superyacht constructed in 1987 that held the same name, this Fulk Al Salamah was launched in 2006 at a cost of $400 million, by Italy's Mariotti Yachts. Also owned by Oman, this 538-footer serves as a shadow boat to Al Said (see #15). A cloak of secrecy surrounds the world's second largest yacht.
At just shy of 593 feet in length, Azzam is the largest yacht in the world. This grand gigayacht is impressive not just for her length, but also for her capability of achieving speeds exceeding 30 knots. Delivered in 2013, the supersized yacht was built by German shipyard Lürssen, too, at a cost of $600 million.
