Kanye West is one of the most controversial musicians of the 21st century. He is married to one of the most popular celebrities right know, paparazzi follow him all day long, and magazines write about him almost every day. Still, we bet you didn't know at least some of these facts about him.

1. Before Music Career

After dropping out of college and before his music career had taken off, Kanye was working a telemarketing job, mostly selling insurance. "I was way better than most of the people there," he said in an interview. "I could sit around and draw pictures, basically do other things while I was reading the teleprompter."

2. Obama's Remark To Him

Barack Obama called Kanye a "jackass," after the famous Taylor Swift fiasco, when West interrupted her speech for winning the MTV award for best female video.

3. Through The Wire

His first hit record was called "Through the Wire," because he actually recorded it while wearing a wire brace around his jaw, which was the result of his near fatal car accident in October of 2002.

4. A Failure At Business

Kanye West launched a travel company "Kanye Travel Ventures," back in 2008. However, the project never really took off.

5. Follow Mother

When Kanye West was 10 years old, he lived in China with his mother for about a year. His mother was a visiting scholar and he decided to tag along.

6. Be Fond Of Fashion And Clothing

Kanye is a huge fan of fashion and clothing. In fact, he has worked with several large companies including Nike and Louis Vuitton. He even managed to sell basic white t-shirts through the French designer brand A.P.C. for $120 a pop.

7. Second Failure At Business

West invested in a burger restaurant store chain called Fatburger in 2008. He opened two stores in his hometown of Chicago, but was forced to close them in 2011 because they weren't turning profit.

8. Bet With Fifty Cent

Back in 2007, both Kanye and 50 Cent were going to release an album in the same week. Fifty promised that he would retire if Kanye outsold him. West outsold him by 250,000 copies, but 50 Cent has yet to honor his words.

9. Kanye’s Father

Kanye's father, Ray West, was a member of the Black Panther Party during American Civil Rights Movement. He was also one of the first black photojournalists in the United States.

10. Kanye’s Net Worth

Back in 2011, Kanye West joined the Occupy Wall Street protest despite the fact that money-wise he belongs to the 1 percent, and not the 99 percent. His net worth is estimated at about $120 million.
